Virginia is an amazingly beautiful, and of course, very historic state.  My very first memories were from our annual family car trips from Florida to visit relatives in New York... and I just remember that when we were getting thru VA on the way up, thank goodness, we were about more than halfway there.  But of course, I-95 doesn't exactly show you the best of Virginia!  Years later, I convinced my Dad to take US17 / US13 most of the way up (the scenic route!) -- and we went through Virginia Beach, over the spectacular Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnel, and up thru Maryland & Delaware.  Later, I visited my friend Tom who went to the University of Richmond (beautiful place!) and when I was an intern in Washington, DC, living in Georgetown, I would often trek across the Key Bridge (sweating, in 95% humidity in my suit, across the Potomac) to go to the Rosslyn Metro Stop with the super, super long escalator.

But I finally got to ROAM free on my 2001 cross-country road trip, when I came into the state on I-81, and took backroads and scenic parkways through the Shenandoah, and got to see Appomatox, Monticello, UVA, and all the beautiful scenery in the western part of the state.  Virginia, I salute you!
