According to Chris:
How could you not like Maine? It's been there for over 200 years, anchoring the upper right hand corner of America, battered and buffeted by the pounding Atlantic Waves, and helping to keep us safe from Canada. The thing about Maine, and people from Maine, is, Maine is just not on the way anywhere -- it is a destination -- the last stop, if you will, and if you are there, it is because you WANT to be there -- almost nobody is just passing through! There's something cool about that. As a youngster growing up in Florida, I always was fascinated looking at maps and seeing that far, faraway place where US1 and I-95 (which both passed thru my hometown) -- where those 2 great roads both ended. (I-95 ends in Houlton, of course, and US1 ends in Fort Kent. I've been to the South End of 95 in Miami, and to US1 in Key West, and someday I'll make it to the other end!!) Anyway, as far as Maine is concerned, I've only been there ONCE but it was a great time...
2 years after I graduated from college, a high school friend was getting married in Bar Harbor. So me, Tom, and Sean flew up Labor Day Weekend from West Palm Beach to Boston, then jumped in a rental car, and started to head up to BH. We spent the night in Portland and had a great time partying in the cobblestone-y old port area, and I just checked and couldn't believe THIS place is still here > Three Dollar Dewey's > it was a great place - drop in if you're there. Anyway, the next day, we decided to go to the beach in the morning, and then take US1 all the way up the coast, which took a long, long, long time, much longer than we thought. We also had to stop and make a pilgrimage to the LL Bean factory store for our then-Preppie friend, and by the time we pulled onto Mt Desert Island, 2 or 3 cases of Old Milwaukee, 4 bags of Doritos, and 3 stops for "Lobster Rolls" later, we were ready to party!
Anyway, I won't try to relive my glory days in full for you here, but the whole weekend of the wedding party, staying in a 200 year old mansion, hanging out in Acadia National Park, eating tons of lobster, etc, was a blast, and when we crossed back into New Hampshire, little did I know I'd not be back since, all this time later. For now, I have to live vicariously through Rachael Ray, Andrew Zimmern, and my other favorite Food & Travel Channel shows! PS - one other funny note is, I do love lobster (who doesn't?) - but growing up in Florida, there is a whole different kind of lobster that has pretty much no claws, and it looks like a giant bug. You just eat the tail - unlike a Maine Lobster which is the "classic" lobster. I had never seen or eaten a Maine Lobster until I was 23 or so! PS also - I am horrible with cracking crustacean shells with nutcrackers. If I have lobster or crabs or something, I like them "pre-shelled".
