If you've read some of the other descriptions on this site, you know I have a fascination for maps and highways, and The 405 is one of the great snarling beasts of American Urban Freeways. Intended originally as just an Alternate Route of Interstate 5, it has become the lifeline of the West Side of Los Angeles, and home of some of the most nightmarish traffic jams in America. But it's not just a highway... the 405 DEFINES West LA and once you cross under it or over it, you're in a different world.

One of the first things I learned is that it is THE 405, not "405" or "I-405" -- the LA Freeways are described by "The"+ the number, but to add to the confusion, they also have names, the 405 being "The San Diego Freeway" -- ostensibly, because it takes you to San Diego. But sometimes the same freeway will have different names AND different numbers along the way... (170/101/Hollywood Freeway/Ventura Freeway, etc...) Anyway, when I was living in Santa Monica for 4 months in 2001/2002, venturing around LA, I always felt a little twinge of happiness when I'd pass westbound on Wilshire or SM Blvd under the 405, feeling like I was almost home. And although I am now living back in Chicago, over TWO THOUSAND MILES EAST of the 405, a little part of me is still there on the West Side, and that's what this shirt is all about.
