As I mentioned in "Atlanta Girl" -- I've spent quite a bit of time in Greater ATL, but my other times in GA have consisted of driving from Florida to Illinois on I-75, and driving from Florida to New York on I-95.  So, a couple of my favorite Non Atlanta Georgia Memories would have to consist of  A) My 2001 Cross Country Trip from Florida to California, Part 1, I actually spent the First Night of the Trip on Jekyll Island.  It was a long, 2-lane drive across marshes and causeways and islands, but when I got there, it was awesome.  Beautiful beach, beautiful trees, really peaceful.  The next day, I drove up and explored Savannah.  Super-cool place, though, in mid-July, it was insanely hot and humid.  I was happy to get my picture taken on the spot of the Forrest Gump Bench, and also, I got a little misty-eyed when I saw and heard the story of the "Waving Girl" statue.  It's good to get off the interstate.

The other Georgia Trip, years earlier, my friend Tom came with me to drive my car up from FLA to Chicago.  Strangely, he'd never had Dairy Queen before that trip, and after his first Blizzard, we stopped at like 5 Dairy Queens in Georgia so he could try every flavor.  The part of I-75 south of ATL is a little plain, but in the north/mountain area, it's pretty.  And, I do like peaches.  I used to prefer nectarines, but lately it seems like they have been breeding peaches that are less fuzzy and make you pucker less, so I go in for the real thing now.  Pecans -- I dig those too.  And Peanuts of course.  I love the song "Movin' to the Country, Gonna Eat a Lotta Peaches".  And, growing up I used to be a big REM and B-52's band.  I even had some old Atlanta Rhythm Section tapes.  So, Georgia, you're a cool state, and here's to you.
