According to Chris:

I have only been to Detroit a couple of times, but I know a TON of people from Detroit & Its Environs.  It seems like half of Michigan has moved to Chicago.  I have a lot of friends from U of M and from Michigan State.  I have friends who vacation in Michigan and go to the beach there.  The best time I had there was on my Summer 2001 Road Trip - I had driven across Canada from Niagara Falls and re-entered the US @ Sarnia / Port Huron.  By the way, that was the only time I've ever seen Lake Huron to date.  Have seen all 5 Great Lakes, I had seen Lake Ontario for a similarly small snippet of time earlier that day.  I went camping in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota a long time ago and got to dip my feet in Lake Superior, and I've seen Lake Erie from Cleveland and been to Put-in-Bay Ohio.  And of course, I see Lake Michigan almost every day.  Sorry for the little diversion there...

Anyway, I was graciously put up by my friends Amy & Jerry & family in Royal Oak -- we had a great time going to places along Old Woodward, and I'd mentioned before I loved the Ice Cream at "Kilwin's" (I've also been to the Kilwin's in Fort Lauderdale) -- anyway, the next morning, I drove straight into Downtown Detroit, the belly of the beast, walked around Downtown, Greektown, saw some of the sights, drove around on some of the freeways, and Detroit to me seemed like a perfectly nice place.  Although, everyone I talked to the day before said "BE CAREFUL!"  So, Detroit, I Salute You -- and I DID last a day there -- one day to be exact -- but I must say that my life has been greatly enriched by all my friends from Detroit -- even Livonia, the hometown of my legendary, semi-apocryphal friend, Danahy.
